How I achieved a 7.5% conversion rate on my Instagram Follower Campaign

Ads set up the right way, can go a long way.

When it comes to running effective ad campaigns, conversion rates are key. For this recent campaign, I hit an impressive 7.5% conversion rate, far exceeding the industry standard of 3-5%. Here’s exactly how I did it.

1. Budget Allocation and Scheduling

To give my campaign the best chance in the ad algorithm, I set a daily budget of about $20. This ensures the ad runs at optimal levels without burning through the budget too quickly. I prefer to use a lifetime budget and calculate it based on the days I'm running the ad. For example, if the campaign runs for 5 days, I set it at $100.

What many overlook is the budget scheduling. I focus the ad spend between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM (sometimes extending to midnight), ensuring the budget is spent when most people are online. I avoid the 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM window since user activity is significantly lower at that time.

2. Narrowing Down the Audience

A critical element to achieving great results is the targeting. With a $100 budget, you're not going to reach millions of people, but I aim for highly specific targeting. For a UK indie pop rock band, I focus on interests closely related to their genre, such as fans of bands like The Clash, Arctic Monkeys, The XX, Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance.

Don’t let the algorithm go beyond your target audience; otherwise, you risk the ad reaching people who don’t resonate with your brand or product. Keep the ad placements simple, and focus on Instagram for this campaign.

3. Crafting the Perfect Ad

Next, it's all about the ad itself. I always look at past performance data, specifically videos that performed well in the last 6 months. After reviewing the content, I came up with a few different ad creatives that I tested. It’s important to A/B test to see what resonates with your audience, as not all creatives will perform the same.

4. Refining Audience Targeting

When targeting a country like the U.S., I start by running the ad across the entire nation. After a couple of days, I analyze the data to see which states are delivering the best results. For example, states like New York, California, Florida, and Texas might show higher engagement. From there, I narrow down my targeting to those top-performing states.

This process is all about audience segmenting and refining that further. By targeting the states with the best performance, I ensure the campaign hits the right people in the right regions.

5. Analyzing Key Metrics

I track key metrics, especially the click-through rate (CTR), because even small sample sizes with a high CTR are telling. If I spend $5 and the ad has a high CTR, that’s something I pay attention to. It’s a good indicator of audience interest.

6. Scaling the Campaign

After identifying the top-performing states, I create four separate ads targeting each of those states and exclude them from the other audiences. I let these new ads run and monitor their performance to see if there are any emerging trends or states that perform well.

It’s a continuous process of optimizing and testing. It’s like finding an oil spot underground — you refine and dig deeper to maximize results.

Conclusion

Achieving a 7.5% conversion rate is a major win, especially when the industry average is around 3-5%. By following these strategies — from precise budget allocation to refining audience targeting and optimizing for Instagram followers — you can significantly improve your campaign’s performance. The key is focusing on the right audience, testing your ads, and constantly optimizing your efforts.
